IPNE and Robbins Library Host Publishing Workshop and Book Awards Ceremony

On Saturday, November 4, 2017, IPNE and the Robbins Library in Arlington MA co-sponsored a publishing workshop on How to Publish Your Book and hosted the awards ceremony for this year's IPNE Book Awards competition.

Panelists Eddie Vincent (Encircle Publications), Susannah Noel (Noel Editorial), Mellisa Sherlin (Writers Business School), Glenn C. Koenig (Message Rain) and Charlotte Pierce (Pierce Press) shared their publishing insights with an audience brimming with questions. The discussion ranged from publishing models to editing to ISBN's to distribution and marketing. The workshop culminated with each panelist giving the audience one Do and one Don't tip as advice for indie publishers. Jill Cofsky (Jill Cofsky Voice Actor) and Nelson Suit (Inkspokes Media) acted as co-moderators.

The event was also the occasion for the presentation of the 2017 IPNE Book Awards honoring independently published works entered in this year's competition (and for IPNE members to get together to catch up and meet new friends). Winners and finalists were presented award certificates in each of 9 categories, plus the IPNE Book of the Year. Congratulations to all and in particular to Chuck Veit and his book The Yankee Expedition to Sebastopol (published by 31by5), which won this year's IPNE Book of the Year Award. All winners and finalists are posted on our the IPNE 2017 Book Awards Winners and Finalists page.

Thank you to all who helped with this event and the book awards, including the book awards entrants, members of the book awards committee, the judges, the Robbins Library and all of you who took time out to attend!

Letter from Your Co-President,
Eddie Vincent

Hi IPNE Members,

As the new IPNE co-president I would like to introduce myself.

My name is Eddie Vincent of Encircle Publications, and I have been the co-president of IPNE since January. I have spent the last several months learning the ropes with the help of the rest of the board.

Here is a link to my bio on IPNE.

I’m reaching out to all of you today because we have some upcoming events and we need help both coordinating and staffing them. As you may know, all of our events are run by members on a volunteer basis.

Two of our cooperative marketing events, New England Author Expo and Bookstock at Woodstock Vermont were in July. We have already begun the coordination for the following shows, booked the tables, and set up IPNE registrations, but we could always have more help leading up to and on the day of the event.

The July events are the New England Author Expo in Danversport (7/26/2017), MA and Bookstock in Woodstock, VT (7/28-30, 2017).

We will also need help with the following events that will take place later this year but planning for which is taking place now.

  • New England Booksellers Association (NEIBA), Sept. 19 in Providence, Rhode Island. Many thanks to organizer Lisa Janice Cohen and her crew of Bonnie Kreitler, Donna Markussen, and Charlotte Pierce for mounting a successful IPNE exhibit at NEIBA 2017. Look for a blog report soon on this event!
  • The New England Library Association (NELA) conference which is pairing this year with the Vermont Library Association, October 22-24 in South Burlington Vermont.
  • The Boston Book Festival (BBF), Copley Square, Boston, Oct. 28.
  • IPNE Book Awards Ceremony (November 4, 2017)

Also, I invite you all to email me to introduce yourselves. As co-president, I believe it is my job to connect with the membership in order to ensure we are fulfilling our mission and that our members are getting what they expect from IPNE.

I look forward to meeting you in person, via email, or on the phone. Please feel free to contact me at President@IPNE.org or call me at 339-368-8229.

Eddie

A Glimpse at the 2017 IPNE Book Awards Judges

For the 2017 IPNE Book Awards, we have gathered a dedicated panel of 32 judges to review book awards submissions. Would you like a glimpse at the judging panel composition and learn more about a few of the judges on the panel?

You'll find that the judges are a diverse book-loving bunch who hail from across New England.

Visit our 2017 IPNE Book Awards Judges Page to find out more about:

  • Who are the Book Awards judges? Are they all librarians?
  • Where are the judges from?
  • What sort of books are the judges most interested in reading?
  • Why do the judges judge?
The page also features short profiles on some of the judges who have sent in bios for us to share!

IPNE to Host Regular Boston-area Workshop on How to Publish Your Own Book

IPNE recently hosted a workshop in Arlington, MA recently (March 4), titled "How to Publish Your Own Book!" Member and book editor Stephanie Franzosa will work with board member Charlotte Pierce to set up a regular meeting of the "IPNE Metro Boston Branch", as suggested by those attending the March 4 workshop.

Attendees learned the basic steps involved in producing and presenting a quality book that will attract readers. Providing a forum for questions and discussions on what it takes to publish a book, the workshop sparked creativity and interest from local residents. "It went great," Charlotte said, "the attendees want to meet regularly!" Several also planned to join IPNE.

The success of the workshop tells us about the continued interest of residents in our communities in making and publishing books. It also tells us the opportunities we have to share our knowledge with others as we continue to expand our network and connect over this exhilarating adventure of writing and publishing.

Membership in IPNE Metro Boston is open to all, with extra benefits available to those who become IPNE members. Use the IPNE contact form to join Metro Boston.

"IPNE, I Have a Problem!"

As independent publishers, we relish our autonomy and "me time," but sometimes we have a quick question (or a major crisis) that needs prompt feedback, and that's what IPNE is here for!

With so many different communications platforms (each of us has a favorite!), we're aiming to centralize member communication on our website. You can reach an IPNE board member or "someone at IPNE" with a question about membership or events using the following methods:

  • For semi-private messages, please use the contact form on the website. These messages are accessible only by BoD and are regularly monitored.
  • Many questions and messages are relevant to members as a whole, and should be posted on our Member Forum . Either "reply" to a topic, or "create topic" if you don't find one that's relevant. This Forum is not accessible to the public; it's members-only. Encourage other members to use the Forum and respond there! And while you're there, many resources can be found on the website, as well.
  • Another great way members can get instant answers is to use our on-demand Office Hours conference line. You can join via webcam, audio only, or call in by phone.

Please note that our phone number, 339-368-8229, is now working! Praise be! Feel free to call; if we don't answer, we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
